07 05 2009 - World Economy in Reverse but Weak Pound offers Hope

Prices for print equipment have never been so good from a buyers point of view. If you are in the fortunate position of having working capital or having finance available then this is an excellent time to invest.

The current market is very tough for all of us. We are all having to work extremely hard and the margins are extremely small. That being said it is an excellent time to invest your money in new equipment. The prices for equipment are anything between 20% - 40% cheaper than this time last year. If you are a customer purchasing from outside the UK then you also have the added advantage of the weak Pound making prices look even more attractive.

Within the last 2 months we have Sold a 5 Unit Harris M600 to a long established customer of ours in South Africa. This was the 6th Web press that they have purchased from Roberts Graphics. A 2005 Komori Spica 429P was shipped to the Far East at the end of April to one of the Komori agents. We have sold 3 Heidelberg MOV presses to another customer in Asia.

It was also very nice to supply two Polar Guillotines a Polar 115 ED and Polar 92ED to a new customer located in South America whom we meat during the Graficas of the Americas exhibition in Miami.

Following an enquiry we received during Drupa 2008 we have just loaded a fully Reconditioned Goss Community Newspaper Press bound for Tanzania, Africa. The Full Colour 16 page press was fully reconditioned and engineered by our engineers to suit the exact requirements and configuration that our customer required. The press is due to sail to Africa next week with our engineers installing the press in early December.

Last month we also supplied to Montenegro a MAN Roland 708 4/4 Perfector which we are due to begin Installation of next month.

We are also extremely delighted to be supplying a Second Harris M850 to a customer in USA just over 1 year since they purchased the 1st Harris M850 press from use.

What are the different types of printing machinery?

Offset Printing Machinery:

Offset printing replaced expensive and labour intensive raised metal type in the printing process with a photographic based system that uses a flat rubber mat to transfer an image onto paper. It was the predominant system for commercial printing from about 1960 into the beginning of the 21st century.

Offset printing works because of hydrophobia, oil and water don't mix. A photographic image in created on a flat metal printing plate that has a grainy surface that holds liquids well. The 'image area' on that plate has a coating that is receptive to oil-based printing inks while the uncoated areas tend to accept water and repel ink. Roller systems on an offset press supply measured amounts of ink and water to that plate allowing an image to form on it's flat surface. Other rollers transfer the image from the metal plate to a cylinder covered with a flat rubber mat called a 'blanket.' Finally, paper is delivered past the blanket cylinder and squeezed slightly against it by a third 'impression' cylinder. The ink transfers from the blanket to the paper and you have printed!

Web Offset Printing Machinery:

"Web-fed" refers to the use of rolls (or "webs") of paper supplied to the printing press. Offset web printing is generally used for runs in excess of 10 or 20 thousand impressions. Typical examples of web printing include newspapers, newspaper inserts/ads, magazines, catalogs, and books. Web-fed presses are divided into two general classes: "Cold" or "Non-Heatset," and "Heatset" offset web presses, the difference being how the inks that are used dry. Cold web offset printing is air dried, while heatset utilizes drying lamps or heaters to cure or "set" the inks. Heatset presses can print on both coated (slick) and uncoated papers, while coldset presses are restricted to uncoated paper stock, such as newsprint. Some coldset web presses can be fitted with heat dryers, or ultraviolet lamps (for use with uv-curing inks).

Sheet Fed Offset Printing Machinery:

"Sheet-fed" refers to individual sheets of paper or paperboard being fed into a press. A lithographic ("litho" for short) press uses principles of lithography to apply ink to a printing plate, as explained previously. Sheet-fed litho is commonly used for printing of short-run magazines, brochures, letter headings, and general commercial (jobbing) printing.

We are extremely proud to announce that last week we signed a contract for work to begin on the building of our new purpose built factory. The factory is being built immediately in front of Wakefield's Europort which is also home to some of the UK’s largest distribution companies due to is ideal location. The factory is being purpose built to our specifications with an overhead crane which helps with both space but more importantly safety. Tony Roberts comments “This investment shows our dedication to our customers and commitment to the industry. Our investment will enable us to provide a better service and to supply a better quality of equipment. Printers no longer wish to spend large premiums on refurbished equipment; however our new facility will allow us to be more efficient enabling us to refurbish machines to a high standard and, more importantly be economically viable to our customers.

Firstly we would like to thank every one who came along to visit our stand during Drupa 08.

During the run up to Drupa 08 there was a lot of uncertainty about the current economic downturn, however people seemed to be quite bullish and still came to purchase used prinitng machinery.
Althougth our sales wern't quit as good as Heidelberg we still had a very possitive show. We sold several pieces of equipment which included a Muller Martini Binder and Polar Guillotine to Saudi Arabia along with a Stahl KD 78 to France. Hopefully this positive sentiment in the printing sector will continue into the second half of the year.
